Urdu Poetry Contest No. 11 – Final Results Scoring Formula Explained
Urdu Poetry Contest No. 11 uses a structured scoring system that combines public appreciation with a judge’s evaluation. To maintain transparency and help participants understand the final results, we are publishing a detailed explanation of the scoring formula.
The final score is calculated from three components: Public Rating Score, Public Vote Score, and Judge’s Score. A negative-marking rule also applies when the judge awards 10 marks or fewer out of 20.
1. Total Marks: 50
The contest scoring system is divided as follows:
| Scoring Component | Maximum Marks |
|---|---|
| Public Rating Score | 10 |
| Public Vote Score | 20 |
| Judge’s Score | 20 |
| Maximum Final Score | 50 |
The two public components are combined to calculate the Public Score, which can contribute up to 30 marks before any applicable penalty.
2. Public Rating Score – 10 Marks
Each ghazal receives an average public rating. The average rating is converted into a score out of 10.
Formula:
Public Rating Score = (Average Rating ÷ 5) × 10
For example, if a ghazal receives an average rating of 4.5 out of 5:
Public Rating Score = (4.5 ÷ 5) × 10 = 9 marks.
The maximum Public Rating Score is 10 marks.
3. Public Vote Score – 20 Marks
The number of public votes received by each ghazal is converted into a score out of 20. The entry with the highest vote count establishes the reference for calculating the other entries’ scores.
Formula:
Public Vote Score = (Entry’s Votes ÷ Highest Vote Count) × 20
For example, suppose the highest vote count is 200 and a ghazal receives 150 votes:
Public Vote Score = (150 ÷ 200) × 20 = 15 marks.
An entry with the highest vote count receives the full 20 marks. Other entries receive proportionally calculated scores.
4. Calculate the Public Score
The Public Score is the sum of the Public Rating Score and Public Vote Score.
Formula:
Public Score = Public Rating Score + Public Vote Score
For example:
| Public Component | Score |
|---|---|
| Public Rating Score | 9.00/10 |
| Public Vote Score | 15.00/20 |
| Total Public Score | 24.00/30 |
This is the score before any negative-marking deduction.
5. Judge’s Score – 20 Marks
The judge evaluates each ghazal and awards marks out of 20 according to the contest’s judging criteria.
The judge’s score is added to the adjusted Public Score. However, if the judge awards 10 marks or fewer, the negative-marking formula below applies.
6. Negative Marking Rule
To account for a low judge’s score, a penalty is applied whenever the judge awards 10 marks or fewer out of 20.
Negative Marking Formula:
Penalty = (20 − Judge’s Score) ÷ 2
The calculated penalty is deducted from the Public Score.
| Judge’s Score | Difference (20 − Score) | Division by 2 | Penalty Deducted |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10/20 | 20 − 10 = 10 | 10 ÷ 2 = 5.0 | 5.0 marks |
| 9/20 | 20 − 9 = 11 | 11 ÷ 2 = 5.5 | 5.5 marks |
| 8/20 | 20 − 8 = 12 | 12 ÷ 2 = 6.0 | 6.0 marks |
| 7/20 | 20 − 7 = 13 | 13 ÷ 2 = 6.5 | 6.5 marks |
| 6/20 | 20 − 6 = 14 | 14 ÷ 2 = 7.0 | 7.0 marks |
| 5/20 | 20 − 5 = 15 | 15 ÷ 2 = 7.5 | 7.5 marks |
| 4/20 | 20 − 4 = 16 | 16 ÷ 2 = 8.0 | 8.0 marks |
| 3/20 | 20 − 3 = 17 | 17 ÷ 2 = 8.5 | 8.5 marks |
| 2/20 | 20 − 2 = 18 | 18 ÷ 2 = 9.0 | 9.0 marks |
| 1/20 | 20 − 1 = 19 | 19 ÷ 2 = 9.5 | 9.5 marks |
| 0/20 | 20 − 0 = 20 | 20 ÷ 2 = 10.0 | 10.0 marks |
| 11–20/20 | Not applicable | No calculation | 0 marks |
Negative Marking Formula: Penalty = (20 − Judge’s Score) ÷ 2. The penalty applies only when the judge awards 10 marks or fewer out of 20. It is deducted from the combined Public Score.
If the judge awards 11 marks or more, no negative-marking penalty is applied.
7. Complete Example: Final Score Calculation
Suppose a ghazal receives an average public rating of 4.5 out of 5, receives 150 votes when the highest vote count is 200, and receives 9 marks from the judge.
Step A: Calculate the Public Rating Score
(4.5 ÷ 5) × 10 = 9.00 marks
Step B: Calculate the Public Vote Score
(150 ÷ 200) × 20 = 15.00 marks
Step C: Calculate the Public Score
9.00 + 15.00 = 24.00 marks
Step D: Calculate the Negative-Marking Penalty
(20 − 9) ÷ 2 = 5.50 marks
Step E: Calculate the Adjusted Public Score
24.00 − 5.50 = 18.50 marks
Step F: Calculate the Final Score
Adjusted Public Score + Judge’s Score
18.50 + 9.00 = 27.50 out of 50
Final Calculation Summary
| Component | Marks |
|---|---|
| Public Rating Score | 9.00 |
| Public Vote Score | 15.00 |
| Public Score | 24.00 |
| Negative-Marking Penalty | −5.50 |
| Adjusted Public Score | 18.50 |
| Judge’s Score | 9.00 |
| Final Score | 27.50/50 |
